Foreknown Purpose
We are musing these days from Philippians 1:12-18 and Paul’s prison experiences. Today I see from his prison there is a foreknown purpose. In turning our prisons into palaces of praise we must see God has a bigger plan we may not can see. In Paul’s situation there was a foreknown calculation. In verse 12 we have the words happened and fallen out. The words fallen out mean to have something to come upon another. It is done in the pass with present day results. The word happened means to cause things to come together for the purpose of bringing about a resemblance. In verse 18b there is a foreknown contrast in the preaching of Paul’s day. He said some preach in pretence some in truth. The word pretence means they preached to irritate or provoke. The word truth is a word for mixture of truth and error. This is why I emphasize expositor preaching in a series form of line upon line and precept on precept. In 18c I find a foreknown cheer. Paul just rejoices in the fact that Christ is being named. Our times of being shut up to an unwelcome situation can change our perception of things around us. There are two extremesof preaching today. One is to conform to the culture around you and the second is to confront the culture around you. I do not want either of these. I want to lift up Christ before the culture around me.
