Luke’s Account Of The Thorny Ground

Let us muse today on Luke 8, verses 7 and 14. These are some powerful pieces to the Parable Of The Sower puzzle given by Luke. One of the pieces is in verse 7 where Luke says the thorn sprang up with the seed. It seems like they were both planted together. The text seems to indicate that the thorns did outgrow the seed. We would have to believe the thorns got more attention towards growth than the seed of the Word of God. Let us be careful of what we are feeding on, the spiritual or the flesh. Another puzzle piece is in verse 14 where Jesus said they heard and went forth. They gave great indication of being a true conversion. How many come through our church doors, give a good profession but just don’t stand the test of time. The last puzzle piece is a phrase used by Jesus to describe the thorns as the pleasures of this life. The word pleasure means that which satifies the sensual or fleshly desires. Oh, how quickly the flesh will choke out the Word. The Bible says ‘For if you live after the flesh, ye shall die, but if ye through the spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.’
