Church Discipline

Let us muse today from Revelation 2:14-15 and the church at Pergamos. There are some great lessons here on the subject of church discipline. Our Lord has commended them for somethings they have done in verse 13. He now address some members they tolerate in their church. One group is those who hold to the doctrine of Balaam. In Numbers 25 Balaam encourages Balak to entice God’s people to sin by alluring them with Moabite women. It may be this group thinks they can take part in the services at the temple of Zeus and the house of God at the same time. I fear we in our churches have taken such a weak stand on divorce, remarriage, adultery, and being a church leader. This weak stand will lead to only more weak marriages and the final down fall of our churchs. The name Balaam means he who destroys the people. They also had in their church those who hold to the doctrine of the Nicolaitans of whom God hated. The Nicolaitans were a group of leaders who sought to divide and conquer the people. They prompted anything that disrupted the unity. In Ephesus Paul spake of these as deeds and now they have become doctrines are the teaching of the church. Let us be careful less the sinful deeds that some have done yesterday will be taught as alright doctrine in the church tomorrow.
