Musing Through Matthew – The Building With A Key

Let us muse again today from Matthew 16: 18 – 20 and the theme of Jesus The King. In our study for today we find the building with a key. Now that Peter has testified that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament, Jesus says He will build His church upon a rock. Peter is to be a piece of a greater rock the Rock of ages. There is nowhere in the text where Rome can get their first pope. Spurgeon said “the wine of Romanism is not to be pressed out of this cluster”. We are told in the building of this church we are given keys to bind or to loose its members. Those who are over the earthly church be careful in making a part of their membership only those who after much time of examination show to be wholehearted followers of Christ. They were told not to tell who He was because of rash response of trying to make Him king, but to us He says go into all the world and tell the story that Jesus saves.
