Musing through Matthew- The Return, The Reward, The Reminder
Let us muse again today from Matthew 16: 27 – 28 and the theme of Jesus The King. The study for today brings out three great truths for examination, the return, the reward, and the reminder. The truth of the return of Christ has been taught down through history and often many have doubted because it just hasn’t happened. Regardless the Bible tells us in 16: 27 for the Son of Man shall come. What a hope of confidence for the redeemed. We are told that He will come in the glory of His Father. This is a brightness and brilliance like a million suns. He will be accompanied with His angels. Angel is plural, one killed 185,000 men at one time in the Old Testament. At his return many will come with him. The text tells us of the reward. He will reward every man according to his works. Those with a great love for God will be rewarded accordingly. The wicked will go to their doom according to their evil works. Remember that God not man decides what is righteous and evil works. In verse 28 we have the reminder. This verse has caused many trouble in understanding over the years. A check of the context I learned from Charles Erdman makes it clear. In Matthew 17 at the Transfiguration Jesus stands with Moses and Elijah many think are the two witnesses of Revelation. This reminder in 16: 28 that some standing here shall not taste death till I come. Our Lord is standing with these two.Let me remind all the redeem will not taste death because He tasted death for us when we die we will exhale here take one step into eternity catch the next breath and breathe forever. They call it eternal life, perpetual unending breath.
