Sowing On Stony Ground
Let us muse today from Matthew 13:5-6 & 20-21 on sowing the seed on the stony ground. This has been called by some a superficial hearer. In the three gospels when the stony ground is mentioned there are several phrases of description given. In the next few days let me lay some of these phrases before us for our meditation. I cannot over emphasize that these grounds are people and not just a parcel of earth. I notice in verse 5 that there was no depth to the sowing of this seed. Paul speaks of the need of the true child of God to be rooted and grounded in the faith. Both of these are terms of great depth. There are things in the sowing world that cannot be accomplished by human means but only by supernatural acts of our God. I wonder about why there is no depth even when this ground was rocky. The Bible says that the righteous are like a Palm tree. We know that the Palm puts down roots and wraps around a rock and then seeks for water. We can only believe that this seed sown on stony ground is not a tree planted by God that will bring forth fruit in its season.
