Amos The Fig Pincher
Let us begin today our musing journey through the book of Amos. In 1:1 we are told that Amos was from Tekoa. It was about six miles from Bethlehem. It was a desolate wilderness between the dead sea, wild hills, and valleys. It was a small-town on the edge of nowhere. In 7:14 we are told that Amos was a gather of sycamore fruit. This was the food of the very poor. It was like our fig. The word gather is our word pincher. The fig pincher would pinch the fruit to hasten it to become ripe. So the great prophet was of a very humble beginning. He was a poor, uneducated, fig pincher. Oh, how our God chooses the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty. ( I Corinthians 1:27)
