God’s Vengeance On His Enemies
Let us begin today to muse from Amos 1:3-10 and the section I have entitled God’s vengeance. Amos mentions in this section three arch enemies of God’s people and shows how God will deal with them. In verses 3-5 Amos deals with Damascus. This is the capital of Syria. This was David’s arch-enemy as well as 10 generations after. The king during David’s day was Adad and thus in all the other kings were named Ben-hadad which means the worshiper of the sun. The repetitious phrase for three transgressions and for four is mentioned in verse three. This idiom is used for the sin that is the straw that breaks the camels back. Damascus crosses God’s line of mercy when they attacked Gilead. In verse four and five God spares no mercy in dealing with this nation. God will bless those that bless His people and cursed with wrath those that mess with His people.
