Musing Through Matthew-The First Beatitude

Let us muse again today from Matthew 5:3 and the theme of Jesus the King. We find in our text the first beatitude. We are told that only true happiness comes when one is poor in spirit. The phrase gives the idea of spiritual poverty or bankruptcy. It has the idea of without Christ I could do nothing and I must decrease and He must increase. It is both commanded and commended according to the text. The commendation is theirs is the kingdom of heaven. We can enjoy a heavenly atmosphere in our lives as we humble ourselves in helpless poverty  before Him.
