We find in our text <strong><em>the first beatitude<\/em><\/strong>. We are told that only true happiness comes when one is poor in spirit. The phrase gives the idea of spiritual poverty or bankruptcy. It has the idea of without Christ I could do nothing and I must decrease and He must increase. It is both commanded and commended according to the text. The commendation is\u00a0theirs is the kingdom of heaven. We can enjoy a heavenly atmosphere in our lives as we humble ourselves in helpless poverty\u00a0\u00a0before Him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let us muse again today from Matthew 5:3 and the theme of Jesus the King.
